Common Candle Myths – Busted!

I've heard quite a few candle myths over the years, so I thought it would be fun to clear up a few of the most common ones!

Myth #1: Wet spots mean the candle is faulty.

Not true!

Wet spots are completely cosmetic and are quite common with natural waxes. They happen when the wax pulls away slightly from the glass, usually because of temperature changes.

They don't affect how your candle burns or smells.

Myth #2: The more fragrance oil, the stronger the candle.

It sounds like it would be true, but it isn't.

Every wax has a recommended fragrance load. Adding more fragrance oil doesn't always make the candle smell stronger and can actually affect how well it burns.

Finding the right balance is what's important.

Myth #3: You don't need to trim the wick.

You definitely should!

I always recommend trimming your wick to about 5mm before each burn. It helps your candle burn cleaner, keeps the flame under control and can even help your candle last longer.

Myth #4: The first burn doesn't matter.

It actually matters the most!

When you light your candle for the first time, let the wax melt all the way to the edge of the container before blowing it out. This helps prevent tunnelling and gives you a much more even burn for the life of the candle.

Myth #5: Natural wax should always look perfect.

Not always!

Natural waxes can sometimes develop things like wet spots or slight colour changes. That's just one of the characteristics of working with natural wax and doesn't mean there's anything wrong with your candle.

Myth #6: A bigger flame means a better candle.

Not necessarily.

A flame that's too big can burn the candle too hot and use up the wax much faster. A nice, steady flame is exactly what you want.
